Mothers Day Flowers: Carnations
The traditional flowers that are to be given to mothers on Mothers day are carnations. It is well known that this marvelous and attractive flower represents a nice symbol of great love and Mothers day itself. However not everyone knows where this tradition is coming from. The initiator of giving namely these flowers on Mothers day is Mrs. Anna Jarvis. This writer and poetess struggled for declaration of official day for moms - Mothers Day. Owing to her hard fight, such a special mother festive was declared later. Nowadays it is recognized as a national festival in America.
When the tradition began
The custom of presenting carnations on Mother’s day got is start on the first official Mother’s Day service. This event dates to May 10, 1908. Anna Jarvis was the first who sent 500 white carnations to the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church, in Grafton, West Virginia. She wanted the carnations to be given the mothers coming to church. Those who visited the prayer service were also asked to wear flowers. Mrs. Ann M. Jarvis, Anna’s mother, adored white carnations. These flowers were their favorite ones. Look at how Anna Jarvis explained the reason for her selection a carnation as a flower that should be gifted on Mother’s Day:
“The white carnation is preferred because it may be thought to typify some of the virtues of motherhood; … whiteness stands for purity; its lasting qualities, faithfulness; its fragrance, love; its wide field of growth, charity; its form, beauty…”
Miss Anna Jarvis annually sent carnations to the Andrews Church on each Mothers Day. The overall number of the flowers sent is about 10,000 carnations. Nowadays people all over the world present and wear carnations on Mother’s Day. This lovely flower is recognized as a symbol of purity, strength and endurance of motherhood. If red carnations are worn to tribute living mothers the white ones - for the mothers who have died.
It may seem that the word ‘carnation’ is derived from coronation. Did you notice that the leaves of the flower in some way look like a crown. The majority of people consider carnation to be divine flower.
